The palace was designed by Luigi Vanvitelli when Charles of Bourbon decided to compete with the magnificence of Versailles.

is one of the most wonderful places to visit in Campania. The largest royal Palace in the world is a Unesco site and makes Caserta, small town, unique in the world. The Palace is considered a masterpiece of the 18th century: 1200 rooms, 2000 windows, the Grand staircase, the Theatre, the rich decoration of the 18th and 19th century rooms... What really makes the site unique is the presence of 120 ha of Royal Gardens including the overlwhelming "English Garden" The historical centre of Caserta deserves a visit too. The Dome, the church del Carmine, the church of san Sebastiano and the Chapel of San Giovanni where tourists can see one of the most important marble altars of the school of Vanvitelli. If you are in Caserta a monument worth going is the Belvedere of San Leucio and the Silk Museum where ancient machinery, looms and silk,once used to decorate the Palace, are still on display. To finish, a visit to Casertavecchia is a must. The Cathedral dedicated to San Michele, the magnificent bell tower and the castle where, according to a legend, one can find the hen with golden eggs.
