Sorrento
The town where the poet Torquato Tasso was born, Sorrento is one of the most important international touristic places. It gives the name to the Sorrento Coast stretching from Castellammare di Stabia as far as Sant'Agata sui due Golfi.
Besides monuments, churches and places of artistic interest such as the thirteenth century Cloister of Saint Francis, The Cathedral, the Historical Center, The Correale Museum, The Inlaid wood work Museum, people are attracted by the natural colors of the sea and the landscape, the beaches, the silence of nature, the smell of sea food, the taste of olive oil and limoncello and the smile and cordiality of local people.
A must see is the Cathedral of Santi Filippo e Giacomo which is in te historical centre and is the archdiocese of Sorrento and Castellammare di Stabia.
Besides the religious sites, the Correale di Terranova Museum is to be visited. It hosts collections of precious pieces of furniture, Capodimonte porcelain works, still life paintings and several Greek and Roman artifacts. Sorrento is further famous for the inlaid wood work.
Several examples handmade works are visible in the Bottega della Tarsia Lignea Museum located in a XVIII century building. The historical centre is full of characteristic and colorful shops which sell plenty of local products.
